Ingredients
  

Pastry

  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry thawed
  • 1 large egg beaten (for egg wash)

Filling

  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Topping

  • fresh strawberries sliced
  • powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Mix together cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Set aside.
  • Wash and slice strawberries. Set aside.
  • Unfold pastry and gently roll out creases.
  • Use a heart cookie cutter to cut out hearts. Make a smaller heart indent inside the larger heart.
  • Brush the outer edge of the hearts with beaten egg.
  • Spoon about ½ tablespoon cream cheese mixture onto the smaller heart, leaving the border around the edge.
  • Top cream cheese mixture with a slice or two of strawberries.
  • Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until pastry is golden brown.
  • Let danishes cool slightly and dust with powdered sugar.
  • Best served on the day they are made, either warm or room temperature.

This makes approximately 18 heart pastries, but will vary depending on the size of your cookie cutter.
